Solar Eclipse Announcement

Dear Northern Families,
As you may be aware, South Central Pennsylvania is in the geographic region to view a partial solar eclipse on the afternoon of Monday, April 8, 2024.

Upon consulting with our district physician, we have made the decision that Northern schools will remain in session. We will continue athletic events and other after-school activities as scheduled.

Even though it is never safe to look directly at the sun, this rare event will spark curiosity. To help prevent unprotected viewing of the eclipse, we will keep students indoors for afternoon recess and physical education classes on this day as the partial eclipse is expected to be viewable in our region from approximately 2:00 to 4:35 p.m. we will also inform students about the dangers of looking directly at the eclipse and educate students on proper safety protocols for their walk or ride home from school.

We encourage you to talk with your children about safety precautions during a partial eclipse. Additional information can be found at https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety. As always, our number one priority is the health and safety of our students and staff.

Please reach out to the attendance office in your child’s school should you wish to dismiss your child early that afternoon due to concerns regarding the partial eclipse. This would be marked as an excused early dismissal.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and for assisting us with keeping our students safe.

Yours in education,

Steve Kirkpatrick
Superintendent of Schools
