Satanic Temple Follow Up

Dear Northern,
An inaccurate headline and story that was published nationally over the weekend ( has generated some misunderstanding about the district’s handling of two separate requests over recent months.

First, the school district is not hosting an After School Satan Club as the title of the article states. In fact, last spring the administration and board denied the request of a community member supported by the Satanic Temple to establish an After School Satan Club at Northern Elementary School.

In a separate matter, at its August 23 meeting, the Board approved an application by the Satanic Temple to use district facilities for a non-school sponsored fundraiser event to be held during non-school hours. Per Board Policy 707, district facilities are available for use by outside individuals and organizations for non-school sponsored purposes. Countless athletic, social, and civic organizations have taken advantage of this opportunity over the years.

As a public school district, the use of our school facilities by outside organizations must be permitted without discrimination. The moment we allowed the first organization to use our facilities for non-school purposes, we were committed to provide the same opportunity for all organizations to do so, provided they satisfy the conditions and application requirements as set forth in policy. We cannot and do not arbitrarily pick and choose which organizations may or may not use our facilities.

In approving any request, the school district does not endorse or promote the activity of any outside organization that rents our facilities, nor are those entities permitted to use the school districts name or logo.
In education,

Steve Kirkpatrick
Superintendent of Schools
