Go For the Greens

Go Green this March by Celebrating Green Vegetables

NYCSD Elementary Schools will be celebrating “Go for the Greens” on March 13, 2019 during lunchtime. Trays of assorted green vegetables will be offered to each child for tasting. Green vegetables are fun to eat and an easy snack. Vegetables will increase children’s vitamin intake to help fight off illness while supplying what they need for growth.

How can a parent increase fruit and vegetable consumption in children who are “picky eaters”?

  1. Children learn by example. Research shows that parents who eat fruits and vegetables regularly, will have more success in having their child try new foods.
  2. When your child is hungry, give a fruit or vegetable snack. Frozen or fresh vegetables/fruits are nutritious. Celery with peanut butter is a great snack that also includes some protein to sustain them until dinner.
  3. Keep a bowl of fresh fruit, like seasonal apples or clementines, on the kitchen counter.
  4. Enhance the presentation of fruits and vegetables with a variety of colors, such as a fruit salad. Different colored fruits and vegetables have different nutrients that your child needs.
