Third Graders Explore Seeds at Dillsburg Elementary

On September 24, 2018, Mrs. Jessica Shover's third grade class participated in a cross-curricular Science day on the topic of "Seeds". First, students dissected a variety of fruits and extracted their seeds. Then, students counted the seeds, rounded the seed count to make the numbers more "friendly", and used a line plot to graph the data. Students practiced using meta cognition skills while reading, The Reason for Fruit, The Most Important Seed, and Barbara McClintock. The Science investigations allowed students to make mini sprouters to watch the seeds grow and weigh the soaked seeds to see how much water they collected in 24hours. Finally, the seed coats were removed from the soaked seeds to see what is really inside of a seed. It was a fantastic and informative day of learning, investigating, and taking risks.
