Head Lice
| Head Lice Information **Please call the school nurse if your child has head lice. It is important to treat with a special shampoo (see letter below). Also, upon returning to school your child MUST be brought to school by the parent / or designee and have their head checked by the nurse BEFORE returning to class--they cannot use the bus until cleared by the nurse** |
Dear Parent or Guardian:
There are 8-10 million cases of head lice in our country yearly, but it is comforting to know that head lice are easily eliminated with relatively easy to use treatments. The following steps will help control the spread of a potential lice outbreak:
1.) Examine your child's scalp and hair closely. Examine all family members as well. Examine your child's head if he/she complains of itching scalp, you notice bite marks behind the ears and at the base of the neck. Also, if your child complains of difficulty sleeping at night(lice are more active at night)
2.) If eggs/lice are noted, contact your school and/or child care center immediately.
3.) Use a pediculicide to treat your child's hair.
4.) Re-examine scalp and hair for 7 to 10 days after treatment.
5.) Isolate all clothing and linen; wash in hot water (130 degrees).
6.) Wash hand (yours and your child's) thoroughly, especially under the fingernails...scratching is one of the early warning signals.
7.) Discourage sharing combs, hats, barrettes and other personal items.
Remember, head lice are nothing to panic or be embarrassed about. Their presence is in no way indicative of a lack of cleanliness and they are easy to eliminate when observed.
**Remember to read the package and all inserts carefully before using the product and to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
