Rate of pay:
- Daily Substitute Teacher: $160 per day
- Daily Building Substitute Teacher: $170 per day
Who Can Apply?
- Those with a bachelor’s or higher degree (any field) or foreign equivalency who complete or have already completed an approved Guest Teacher Program can apply to be a Substitute Teacher. (Click here for Guest Teacher Program information).
- Students enrolled in an approved PA teacher preparation program with at least 60 completed credit hours.
- Educators with inactive certifications (may substitute up to 180 days per school year).
The extension of Pennsylvania’s Act 33 of 2023 provides more options to serve in our schools for the 2025/26 school year. This includes:

Prospective Educators – Recent and soon to be college graduates who have completed an approved teacher preparation program and passed or are working to schedule required certification exams may serve as Substitute Teachers.

Retired Educators – Still requires approval from PSERS but will not impact PSERS annuity.
Requirements:
- Valid U.S. work authorization
- Obtain applicable substitute teaching permit
- Obtain the following PA clearances/training/test results:
- Child Abuse History (Act 151)
- Criminal History (Act 34)
- FBI Fingerprints (Act 114)
- Complete required child abuse training (Act 126)
- Recent TB test (within last 3 months)
