NES, NMS & NHS Reopen for Classes Tuesday
Students at Northern Elementary School, Northern Middle School, and Northern High School will return to their buildings on Tuesday, January 19. These schools transitioned to remote learning for portions of last week, having exceeded the number of COVID-19 cases permitted in their buildings within a 14-day period. They will join the rest of the district in resuming classes after the Monday, January 18, observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Thanks to those schools for your flexibility and cooperation during your time in remote learning. The buildings have been appropriately sanitized and thoroughly cleaned. As you return to school, please continue to follow our well-established practices of staying home when symptomatic, wearing face coverings, and socially distancing.
Northern Middle School Closure January 15-17
Today, Thursday, January 14, the district received notice of a fourth case of COVID-19 at Northern Middle School. This fourth case was a student last in the building on Friday, January 8. Because four cases have accumulated within a 14-day period, the middle school must close for three days per PDE’s Closure Orders starting tomorrow, Friday, January 15. The three-day closure will include the weekend.
All middle school sports practices, competitions, and extracurricular activities are also canceled Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
A reminder that Monday is a Teacher In Service Day, so classes will resume on Tuesday, January 19.
Thank you for continued patience and understanding as we navigate the many challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
High School Closure and Middle School Cases
Today, Tuesday, January 12, the District received notice of a sixth case of COVID-19 at the high school, a student last in the building on Monday, January 11. Because the high school has accumulated these six cases within a 14-day period, the high school will close per PDE’s Closure Orders starting tomorrow, Wednesday, January 13, and will proceed with remote learning through Friday, January 15.
In addition, the District has been notified of three cases of COVID-19 at Northern Middle School. The cases involve three students last in the building between Monday, January 4 and Friday, January 8. This puts the middle school one case away from having to close. In the event the middle school must close, the District will notify school staff and families, and the middle school will transition to remote learning.
For each of these cases, the district has taken action in accordance with the guidelines of the PA Department of Health (DOH) and the protocols established in the district’s Health and Safety Plan, including consultation with the DOH, contact tracing, quarantining individuals that were in close contact, and appropriate cleaning and disinfecting of affected areas.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate the many challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
