" Every Polar Bear needs to learn how to swim"

Northern York School District Aquatics Curriculum:

The Aquatics Curriculum follows the district's mission statement: "to ensure that all learners are prepared to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow."  One of these challenges is the ability to swim. It is our goal to educate students on the importance of water safety, to make sure that each student has the opportunity to learn how to swim and to introduce swimming and water sports as a life long activity.

This is a brief overview of the Aquatics Curriculum approved by the Northern York County School Board:

Grades 2 and 4:

As part of the Northern York County School District Physical Education curriculum, all students in grades 2 and 4 are scheduled for a series of six consecutive swimming lessons during the fourth marking period.  Please check the calendar for your students scheduled class. Students will be bused from their elementary school to the pool which is located in the Northern High School.  The students will be accompanied by their classroom teacher.  All levels of American Red Cross Instruction are offered, from basic skills through advanced stroke instruction.  Our goal is to teach the students to swim and to develop their water safety awareness.  Parents are cautioned that swimming skill is no substitute for supervision.

The students will have to bring their own suits and towels to use during the lessons. There are other ways you can help your student during the days they have lessons:

·        Have your student dress simply.

·        Do not let your student wear jewelry to school.

·        If your child has long hair, send them to school with their hair tied back.

·        All valuables should be left at home.

·        Students should NOT bring goggles.

All parents and grandparents are invited and encouraged to attend the last class session to observe your child in the pool.  Additional information on Parents Day will be sent home with your student.

This is the Elementary Swimming Schedule for 2011:

Grades 6, 7, and 8:

Middle School students walk over to the Natatorium for seven aquatic lessons during the second marking period.  The girls come the first half and the boys the second half of the marking period.  We encourage students to wear sweatshirts with hoods on them the day they have swimming in case of bad weather.

Grade 6 does American Red Cross swimming.  The students are broken up into two ability groups.

Grade 7 has a Basic Canoeing and Water Safety Unit.  The students learn and practice basic water safety skills, learn the fundamentals of canoeing and other hazards that one may encounter when boating.

Grade 8 students are offered two units of study.  If the eighth grade student passes our water screening test (jump in the deep end, tread water for 15 seconds and swim one length of the pool doing the freestyle or front crawl stroke) the student will take the Mask, Fin and Snorkel Unit.  In this unit students will learn how to clear the snorkel, the proper water entries and the proper techniques of equipment care.

If the eighth grade student does not pass the water screening test, they will continue with American Red Cross swimming lessons.  They will then take the screening again at the end of the unit.

High School Students (Grades 9,10)

Students will take Aquatics during the third marking period.  The girls come one half of the marking period and the boys the other half.  One year a Canoeing and Water Safety Unit will be offered which will include 7 paddling strokes, canoeing dangers and swamped canoe safety.

The other unit they will receive in high school is the Aquatic Fitness Unit.  This unit includes shallow water aerobics, deep water jogging, interval training and water polo.

Swimming is also an elective offered to our juniors and seniors during the third marking period.  The student can choose to do lap swimming, mask, fin and snorkel, water polo, or diving.

The Basic Swimming Unit is also offered to high school students during the first marking period.  Any 9th grade student or new student who does not pass our water screening test will take Basic Swimming the first marking period instead of the student's regular physical education class.  This unit focuses on basic swimming skills and aqua phobia.  If the student does not pass the water screening test at the end of this unit they will take Basic Swimming the following year (s) until they pass the course.

Life Skill Classes:

All Life Skill classes come to the Natatorium twice a year for swimming.  They come during the first and third marking periods.  All grade levels receive American Red Cross swimming lessons.  The Middle and High School classes receive lessons in canoeing, aerobic fitness and mask, fin and snorkel.

**Please note that for all grade levels, a one piece suit for girls is preferred, but please do not feel like you have to go out and buy a one piece suit for your child's seven classes in the pool.  A shirt made out of polyester, nylon or mesh may be worn over your child's two piece suit.  Please make sure the suit is NOT cotton, as cotton clogs our filter.  We have extra shirts here at the pool.

It is the Aquatics Department goal that all students be prepared to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow, whether on land or in the water!

If you have any questions about our curriculum, please don't hesitate to contact me!
