Polar Bear Foundation Campaign: Shaping a Positive Future

Artist-In-Residence Program                                       
Professional artists and musicians from various artistic disciplines will be invited into the schools to work with students from each level.  Exposure to career opportunities within the arts and a greater appreciation of the arts in our society will be provided.
 
Capital Area School for the Arts                                 
Financial assistance will be provided through scholarships for students who qualify for one of the program areas of the Capital Area School for the Arts, but can not attend because of the student obligation to pay the tuition cost.
 
School to Work Initiatives                                         
To enhance partnerships between Northern High School students and local businesses and industries.  Partnerships will include job shadowing, mentoring, and apprenticeships.
 
High School Weight Room                                           
In order to promote lifetime fitness, athletic equipment must be refurbished.  The current weight room uses older equipment, consisting primarily of weight machines.  Cardiovascular machines (treadmill, stair climber, etc.) pedometers and heart rate monitors will replace the outdated weight equipment.
 
Athletic Development Funds                                        
Athletic Development Funds will be provided to enhance current athletic programs, assist in establishing new programs and provide facilities and maintenance for all of our athletic programs.
 
After School Support                                              
After school tutoring provides extra help to students who are at risk of not meeting minimum proficiency levels.  The tutoring includes study skills and practice on material based on the PSSA.
 
Technology Enhancements                                         
Through technology, students learn essential skills that will not only make them more productive and efficient in their classes, but also throughout their working lives.  Funds will be utilized to help us provide the latest technical resources for our schools.
 
Naming Opportunities                                               
Naming opportunities are available for a variety of school programs, such as scholarships to the Capital Area School for the Arts, as well as school facilities, like the High School Library.
 
Endowment Fund                                                    
Funds assigned to the Endowment Fund will help the Foundation to fund programs in perpetuity.  Funds would be distributed on an annual basis according to their availability.
 
Summer Enrichment Series                                         
Funds to provide reading and math tutorials for students struggling in these two areas.  Funds would be utilized at each level:  elementary, middle school and high school.
 
Environmental Camp                                                  
Funds to be used to develop camps for fourth and sixth grades, utilizing the natural environments of the District and integrating the Pennsylvania standards into hands-on learning projects.
 
Helping Hands Program                                               
The Program will be develped to offer assistance to needy students in the school district.  Medical and dental assistance to students in need may be supplemented.
 
Drama Camp                                                           
Drama Camp will be hosted annually to enhance creative expression in children grades 3 to 8 and enhance appreciation for the theatre.  Each session incorporates the various components of the teatre including characterization, staging, lighting, memorization and scenery building.
 
At-Risk Program for Middle School Students                     
The summer program will be a seven-week program, utilizing district staff and college students as mentors to Middle School students.  The program will be actively based and will focus on building self-esteem, developing life skills, learning and study skills and developing school and community pride.
